It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Dr. Alfred Kikoti in Arusha, Tanzania on October 13, 2017.  He served as the Chair of our board since it was established in 2011.  He was also the leader of the World Elephant Centre, a partner organization with whom we had been developing plans for a major international elephant conservation visitor centre along the Arusha – Serengeti Highway.  Alfred was passionate about elephant conservation and was a specialist in collaring and tracking elephants throughout Tanzania developing an extensive data base on their movements that was instrumental in assisting communities adapt to wildlife movements more effectively while conserving elephant populations.  He also served on the IUCN specialist elephant group and was an outspoken advocate aligned with many organizations actively promoting elephant conservation in Tanzania.  Our sincere condolences are extended to Alfred’s wife Miriam and son Jesson.

Alfred’s passion and commitment to this globally iconic species and the environments which they need to survive was a model and an inspiration to many.  As a tribute to Alfred’s work, it is important for us to continue to promote that commitment in the face of forces of greed and indifference to ensure that living in and with nature remains a valued human ideal.  The Kesho Trust will set up the Alfred Kikoti Elephant Conservation Fund to support ongoing efforts to achieve the outcomes Alfred was so passionately pursuing.  Please contribute to this fund through our website and identify your donations as dedicated to this cause.
