Objective
to enhance community’s adaptive capacity to climate change challenges through a gender-responsive approach in Enduimet Wildlife Management Area of Northern Tanzania.
Results
- Increased understanding of effective climate change adaptations and effective human-wildlife conflicts (HWC) mitigations in Enduimet WMA. Achieved by:
- educating the agro-pastoralists on alternative eco-friendly farming practices.
- supporting provision of conservation and climate change education through youth-led environmental clubs in primary and secondary schools.
- delivering training to communities on effective HWC mitigations, thereby reducing crop damages, livestock depredation, human injury, and loss of lives.
- Increased adoption of technological innovative adaptation techniques to climate change challenges in EWMA. Achieved by:
- promoting various new technologies within the communities such as the use of clean cook stoves to reduce pressure on forest resources.
- supporting communities to adopt rainwater harvesting technologies for improved access to water for domestic uses, livestock and irrigation;
- orienting and training communities on early warning systems through existing weather forecasting Applications (Apps) and promote the use of Short Messaging Service (SMSs) on mobile phones to enable access to local weather forecasts and enhance preparedness among the agro-pastoralists.
- Improved capacity of the agro-pastoralists of EWMA on alternative and resilient livelihoods to effectively adapt to climate change consequences. Achieved by:
- awareness creation on climate smart agriculture with the use of demonstration plots, resulting into improved crop production and enhance food and income security among community members especially women.
- promoting self-help groups through Community Conservation Banks (COCOBA) among the Maasai women for improved micro-financing services in the EWMA’s villages.
- promoting cultural tourism with the Maasai communities for increased household’s income.
